I haven't looked at the Debroy translation. However, he has a dual life as a translator and as a politician in Modi's government. So I would be deeply skeptical of it. Even if the translation is scholarly and accurate, it seems like it could be part of the larger ont-op that is the new Hindu fundamentalism, as you say.
P. Lal's is definitely the one to read. One thing I love about it, which is inherent in its poetic sensibility, is that he leaves honorifics and many other words that can be understood from context in transliterated Sanskrit.
