Part of the problem is that we are only calling it a "climate crisis' when there is actually an even more pressing extinction crisis that is only partially cause by climate warming. We need to reframe the discussion around a dual "Climate and Extinction Crisis". Here's an example of such framing. (Note: This doesn't tackle environmental justice explicitly, but it can and must be included in the broader discussion. And Lake Merritt is in an urban center near low income neighborhoods.)
Nature Is Giving Humanity Our Final Extinction Crisis Warning
Yeah that's definitely true. It's way beyond just a changing climate -- and some of the non-climactic ecological problems are driven by identical mechanisms to the climate problems, like ocean acidification which is caused by the Dead God/Oil/CO2 but is separate from and independent of climate change in the sense of warming. Another one is plastic -- also caused by the Dead God/Oil, but with very different consequences.
EJ is a good framing that undoes a lot of the damage that the white liberals I mention in this article did. But the risk is that we end up thinking too narrowly about localized forms of ecological degradation since those are *measurably* linked to class. We need to be able to talk about things that are unmeasurable and subjective and yet also true, like "humanity is going extinct." Well we are, we just don't see it in the population numbers right at this specific historical moment because we're still living on borrowed time.
Also you are my proof that Substack is only boosting paid 'stacks. You found me right away when I turned on payments. This is probably obvious and makes clear business sense to them, but it makes me unhappy since my goal is to reach people not make money.
